Adding a Computer to the SRC Network

Each association at the Statewide Resource Centre has been allocated a range of IP addresses to use. A static IP address is an address that doesn’t change each time you start up your computer. If you are using a computer in your office as a file server you will be able to do things like set security on applications that will allow you to only share data with computers with specific IP addresses. This can be used in conjunction with the password you are probably already using when accessing these files, making your data even more secure.

Please note: if you are using a computer in one of the meeting rooms, there are instructions for configuring your computer here.

It is important that each association only uses IP addresses from the range assigned to them, as using an IP address prevents any other machine in the building from using the address, thus preventing that machine from gaining Internet access. Please check that your computers are using IP addresses from the range assigned to your association in the list below.

If you need additional IP addresses assigned please contact Olwyn Gray.

The following page gives information on setting The IP address of your computer, and will be useful when guests to your office or users of the seminar rooms need to configure a computer to use our network to access the Internet.

Configuring computers to run on the SRC network

System 9 Macintosh instructions

To connect to our network using a Macintosh you should go into Control Panels and select TCP/IP.
Before you make any changes you should go to File and save your current configuration as <whatever_name_you_like> so that you can easily switch back to your original settings later.

Connect via Ethernet, manually, using an IP address from the range supplied to your association.

The Subnet is 255.255.255.0
The Name server addresses are 10.31.1.1, 10.31.1.2, and 10.31.1.3
The Search Domain IP is 10.80.79.11

OS X Macintosh instructions.

Open the System Preferences panel.

  • Click System Preferences on the Dock.
  • Or, select the Apple menu, then select System Preferences.

Double-click the Network icon.

If you connect to other networks, click the Location drop-down menu and click New Location. Type in a meaningful name and press OK.

This menu replaces the Location Manager that appears in earlier versions of the Macintosh OS.

While this location is selected, all changes you make to your TCP/IP preference panel will be saved as a separate configuration.

To switch between locations in the future, click the Location drop-down menu and select the desired location.

Click the Show drop-down menu and select Built-In Ethernet if it is not already selected (or another Ethernet adapter option).

If you are unable to edit the fields, click the padlock in the lower left corner. Enter a name and password for an account with administrative privileges. (This is usually the same account you created when you installed OS X, or another user account to which you have granted administrator privileges.)

Make sure the TCP/IP tab is selected.

Click the Configure drop-down menu and select Manually.

Type an IP address from the range allocated to your association, which has not been used by one of your other computers.

The Subnet Mask to type in is 255.255.255.0

The name servers to use are: 10.31.1.1, 10.31.1.2, and 10.31.1.3

Type netspace.net.au into the Search Domains text box.

To prevent accidental changes to your settings, ensure that the padlock in the lower left is in the closed (locked) position. You may need to click on the lock icon.

When you are finished changing your network settings, click Apply.

Save the configuration when prompted.

From the System Preferences menu (located next to the Apple menu), select Quit System Preferences.

PC instructions

Go into Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network, and check that NetBEUI for ethernet and TCP/IP for ethernet are installed. If not, add them to your network settings. If you need to add these to your computer you will need the operating system on CD.

Click on the IP Address tab

Type in an IP address from the range assigned to your association.

The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0

The Gateway address is 10.80.79.1

Go to the DNS tab

Give the computer an appropriate host name (eg. cptav1). Ignore the Domain box

DNS search order is: 10.31.1.1, 10.31.1.2, and 10.31.1.3

Click OK to close the Network control panel. You may need to insert the Operating System disc to update your settings. If this is necessary a message will appear asking for the disc.

Proxy settings

You will need to change your proxy settings to filter.vicone.netspace.net.au. The port for the proxy server is 8080. This only for HTTP and HTTPS. You don't need to use the proxy server for email.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer users should go to the Tools menu and then select Internet Options.

Under the General tab, look at the Settings and and ensure that your browser is set to check for newer versions of external pages every visit to the page.

Then, under the Connections tab, take a look at your LAN settings. Check to see if the browser is using a Proxy Server. The proxy to use is filter.vicone.netspace.net.au. The port to use is 8080

Netscape Communicator or Navigator

Netscape Communicator or Navigator users should go to the Edit menu and thn select Preferences.

Check to see if the browser is using a Proxy Server. The proxy to use is filter.vicone.netspace.net.au. The port to use is 8080

IP addresses for use in seminar rooms

IP addresses from the range 10.80.79.16 - 10.80.79.19 should be used by visitors wishing to make temporary use of the ethernet connections in the seminar rooms.

Using CPTAV's wireless router

A router is available from CPTAV for use in the SRC meeting rooms. This allows for up to 4 computers to connect to the Internet via ethernet cables. The router also provides wireless access, so computers with WiFi built-in can connect wirelessly to the Internet. CPTAV has 4 wireless cards available, should you wish to have more than 4 computers connected, or if you want to allow presenters or others to connect to the Internet without the need for an ethernet cable. Speak to Terry Hayes about booking the router and wireless cards.

Setting up the Netcomm Wireless Firewall Router

This router provides Internet access for up to 4 computers via ethernet cables, and up to 255 computers via wireless connections. The speed of the wireless connection is up to 54 Mbps, and the speed of wired connections is up to 100 Mbps.

  1. Connect one end of the supplied ethernet cable into the WAN connection on the back of the router and the other end into an ethernet wall socket.
  2. Plug the power adapter into the router and then into a powerpoint and turn the switch on. After approximately 30 seconds the lights will flash on the front of the router. The router is now ready for use.
  3. To provide access for computers, either:
    1. Connect computers to the router with blue ethernet cables (plug the cables into any of ports numbered 1,2,3 or 4 on the back of the router)
    2. For laptop computers with a wireless adapter, ask users to select the CPTAV network from the range of wireless connections available.
    3. If a laptop does not have a wireless adapter, but does have a PCMCIA slot on the side or back of the computer, install one of the wireless adapter cards included in the box with the router. It will be necessary to install some software from the included CD-ROM.

Instructions for configuring computers (85K PDF).

Please remember to retrieve the wireless adapter cards at the end of the session.

Administration information

The wireless access point is called CPTAV.

The connection is not encrypted. No password is required by a computer within range of the router to gain Internet access.
